As you cycle (or drive) around your city's streets and paths, the hit the pothole application will record all of the jolts that you receive. When you submit the data, it will be transmitted back to the hit the pothole servers and you can then instantaneously see this data on the map on the homepage.

Now Available! Pothole Radar has all of the same functionality as Hit the Pothole with one notable addition. Pothole radar continuously polls the Hit the Pothole's servers to check for potholes that you may be about to hit. It will warn you of the immanent danger with both an audio and vibration alert. The audio mixes in with your currently playing music.

Recording

Now you are set and ready to get out on the road and start riding into potholes. Flip over to the Record tab and hit the green Record button. Once you do, the app will throw up a lock screen. This is because the app will not work if you lock your phone. Unfortunately, Apple will not let us receive accelerometer (the gyroscope feedback) messages while the app is running in the background. Plus this in-built lock feature also allows 3G and 3Gs (which don't support background processes) users to use the app without having to worry about pocket dialing boss.
If you unlock the screen while it is running, you will see the following. A map, that centers on your current location, and place markers showing you where potholes were encountered.

When you have finished your journey, press the stop button, and a green submit button and a black clear button will appear. Clear will remove your current route and potholes, submit will send the potholes to the hit the pothole servers and you will be able to see them live on the site, moments after submission.

Pin Screen

Before you can start using the application you need to put in your email address. Don't worry, we will never send you any spam. In fact, we don't even save your email address. We save a MD5 hash of your email address so we couldn't send you spam or sell your email address even if we wanted to. What we can do with your email address is record how many potholes you have hit so we can show you how you're doing on our leaderboard. The PIN that is generated for you allows you to go and see your potholes on the Radar Map. Type in your email and PIN and the map will show you all your potholes broken out by date.

The app (and this website) integrates with Gravatar - a tool that allows us to use your email address to bring back your avatar. Register with Gravatar to change your avatar and create a profile.

Daredevil

Hit the Pothole saves away how many potholes you have hit and gives you a badge to show you how you're doing. Have a look at all the level ups you can achieve.

Settings

The first time you use the application, it is worth going over to the settings tab to get a feel for how sensitive the application will be. Choose your form of transport, bicycle, or motorized. Once selected, the app will select the best sensitivity for your mode of transport. Give the iPhone a jolt, and you should see the road turn from flat and smooth into a potholed monstrosity. Adjust the sensitivity slider to make the app more or less sensitive to jolts.

About

The about screen gives you some tips on where to place your iPhone if you are cycling or driving. It also gives you a link to the hit the pothole website which will open up in safari.

Lock screen

As geospatial coordinates cannot be measured while the iPhone is locked, a replacement lock screen is shown when the app is recording. Swipe to unlock just as you normally would.
